Your iPhone feeling sluggish? Apps crashing? Storage running low even though you barely have any photos? The culprit is almost always cached data. Clearing your iPhone cache is one of the fastest ways to speed things up, and it takes less than five minutes.
What Is Cache on iPhone?
Cache is temporary data that apps store to load things faster. Your browser caches images and scripts so pages open quicker. Instagram caches photos you have scrolled past so they load instantly next time. Over weeks and months, this data piles up — sometimes eating several gigabytes of storage.
The problem? Cache can become corrupted, bloated, or just unnecessary. When that happens, apps slow down instead of speeding up. Clearing it gives them a fresh start.
How to Clear Safari Cache on iPhone
Safari is usually the biggest cache hog. Here is how to clear it:
- Open Settings
- Scroll down and tap Safari
- Tap Clear History and Website Data
- Confirm by tapping Clear History and Data
This removes browsing history, cookies, and cached files. You will stay logged into most apps, but you will need to re-login to websites in Safari.
How to Clear App Cache on iPhone
Apple does not give you a single button to clear all app cache. Instead, you have two options:
Method 1: Offload Apps (Keeps Your Data)
- Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage
- Tap on any app taking up lots of space
- Tap Offload App
- Reinstall it from the App Store — your documents and login stay intact
This removes the app itself but keeps your personal data. When you reinstall, the cache is gone but your stuff is still there.
Method 2: Delete and Reinstall
- Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage
- Tap the app
- Tap Delete App
- Reinstall from the App Store
This wipes everything — cache, data, login info. Use this when an app is really misbehaving and offloading did not fix it.

How to Clear System Cache on iPhone
iOS manages system cache on its own. The best thing you can do is restart your iPhone regularly. A simple restart clears temporary system files and frees up RAM.
On iPhone X and newer: Hold the side button and either volume button, then slide to power off. Wait 30 seconds, then hold the side button to turn it back on.
How Often Should You Clear Cache?
You do not need to do this weekly. Clear cache when:
- Your iPhone storage is nearly full
- Safari or apps are running slow
- An app keeps crashing
- Websites are not loading correctly
For most people, clearing cache once every month or two is plenty.
Does Clearing Cache Delete My Photos or Messages?
No. Cache is temporary data — it is separate from your photos, messages, notes, and documents. Clearing cache will not delete any of your personal content. You might get logged out of some websites in Safari, but that is about it.
Still Low on Storage?
If clearing cache did not free up enough space, check your Photos app. A few hundred 4K videos and Live Photos can eat 50GB+ without you realizing it. Offload old photos to iCloud or Google Photos, then delete them from your device.
Also check iMessage — long conversations with lots of photos and videos can be huge. Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Messages to see which conversations are the worst offenders.
